AUTHOR
CHRISTIAN KRACHT
Christian Kracht, the worldly Swiss millionaire’s son, grew up in the United States, Canada and the south of France. He currently lives in Bangkok. With his first book Faserland (1995), Kracht became the figurehead of the so-called German pop writers, also jokingly referred to as the VW Golf generation. The pop writers are consumerist authors of the 1980s and 1990s, often featuring frequent references to branded clothing and contemporary goods. At times the writing seems intended to shock, but that does not make it any less compelling. They can be compared to our generation Nix, to which writer Ronald Giphart belongs, and the American Brat Pack (including Bret Easton Ellis). Kracht comes to the Netherlands with his latest novel 1979: a contemporary journey to the heart of darkness about which the German press is highly enthusiastic.
“a hard, cold, beautiful, enigmatic and threatening book” — Der Spiegel, 9 November 2002
