Martha Nussbaum

On Friday 12 December, Martha Nussbaum will be a guest at BorderKitchen. At the Campus The Hague of Leiden University she will be interviewed about her latest book Politieke emoties.

Martha Nussbaum is professor of law and ethics at the University of Chicago. Dutch translations of her work include Oplevingen van het denken, De breekbaarheid van het goede, Niet voor de winst, Mogelijkheden scheppen, and De nieuwe religieuze intolerantie. Nussbaum is an honorary doctor at the University for Humanistics in Utrecht and at KU Leuven.

In March, her book Politieke emoties. Waarom een rechtvaardige samenleving niet zonder liefde kan was published. In this new work, Nussbaum aims to give emotions their rightful place: at the heart of political theory. In this groundbreaking book, her most important themes come together: the philosophy of emotions and the theory of social justice form a plea for greater empathy in political thinking. Sharp, provocative, wise and engaged, as only Nussbaum can be.

Martha Nussbaum will be interviewed by Simone van Saarloos (1990), who studied literary studies and philosophy at the University of Amsterdam. She writes fiction, reviews literature, and organises debates and lectures. She has published in NRC, Das Magazin, and Vrij Nederland, and is a columnist for NRC Next.
