Guillermo Arriaga

Mexican writer Guillermo Arriaga broke through in 2001 with the screenplay for the film Amores Perros. This was followed by three major films that stood out for their strong storytelling: 21 Grams, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada and the 2006 Palme d’Or winner Babel. Characteristic of his work is a non-linear narrative structure that forces the viewer to search and think. Because he interweaves multiple storylines, he is able to address a wide range of issues within a single story. Arriaga is fascinated by human nature; his films explore guilt, punishment, death and loneliness. He manages to address existential questions without pretension or overwhelming the viewer.
