Eleanor Catton

Her novel The Luminaries is written in a Victorian style reminiscent of Dickens and can be structured according to the astrological signs of its twelve main characters and their movements in the sky above 19th-century New Zealand. The story begins on 27 January 1866, when a weary traveller, on a stormy night, stumbles upon a secret gathering of twelve men. From this moment, a mysterious adventure unfolds. The result is a hefty novel that reveals a web of interconnected events, ingeniously woven together and richly narrated.

Eleanor Catton was 22 when she made her debut with The Rehearsal. The Luminaries is her second novel and will appear in Dutch translation in early March as Al wat schittert. It is translated by Gerda Baardman and Jan de Nijs and published by Anthos.
