DANIEL GALERA
On Tuesday 26 August, Brazilian author Daniel Galera will be the guest of BorderKitchen. He will be interviewed about his novel Blood-Drenched Beard.
Daniel Galera (São Paulo, 1979) was included in The Best of Young Brazilian Novelists by Granta magazine at the end of 2012. Blood-Drenched Beard is Galera’s third novel and marked both his breakthrough in Brazil and internationally. Galera was one of the founders of the publishing house Livros do Mal and published his first novel Dentes Guardados there.
About Blood-Drenched Beard:
After X’s father commits suicide, he leaves his son with a sheepdog, a family secret, and a vague longing for redemption. With the dog, X travels to a seaside town in southern Brazil. There he builds a new life and tries, in a sometimes hallucinatory search, to discover what happened to his grandfather, who once disappeared mysteriously from the village and is believed to have been murdered.
However, a neurological condition complicates his search: he cannot recognise faces. The inhabitants react with hostility to his questions about his grandfather, and slowly it becomes clear to him that he may be heading towards the same fate as his grandfather.
Blood-Drenched Beard was published by Atlas Contact. The book was translated by Harrie Lemmens. Original title: Barba Ensopada de Sangue.
