BOOK PRESENTATION
VOICES FROM GAZA - SHROUQ DOGHMOSH ‘NIEMAND OP DE BEGRAAFPLAATS’
Niemand op de begraafplaats is a collection of stories about loss, survival and humanity. All the stories take place during the genocide in Gaza.
Take Layla, for example. When she was born, her mother did not know what to name her and eventually chose something light-hearted. Her father turned it into a beautiful nickname, and that became the name her family would use from then on.
As she grew older, the first letters she learned to write were those of her own name. She wrote them everywhere: on the classroom wall, on her school desk, on the walls at home, on doors, car windows and mirrors, without worrying about the consequences.
She fell in love with a boy who carved her name into every tree trunk and wrote it in the sand on the beach. Her favourite place was the restaurant that had put her name on plates, cakes and cups of iced coffee.
And now she lies on the hospital floor, wrapped in a white sheet bearing the handwritten words: identity unknown.
Shrouq Doghmosh is a writer and poet. Born in Gaza in 1996, she holds a bachelor’s degree in Arabic Language and Literature from Al-Azhar University in Gaza. She writes short stories and previously published a collection entitled I Was Killed at This Time.
This book is a full-colour hardcover and includes a pop-up.
