By day, Raz van Houts (1997) works as a psychologist. But in the evenings, he has been crafting his literary debut: We Zijn Allemaal Patiënten (We are all Patients), a non-fiction exploration of the experiences of a young psychologist.

The book offers a unique insight into a profession which is increasingly necessary but still somewhat mysterious to those on the outside. With the enthusiasm of a newcomer to the worlds of both psychology and literature, Van Houts describes what it is like, after four years of studying, to suddenly find oneself in front of a real person with very real problems.

With a combination of humor and depth, Van Houts takes us through the ins and outs of the work of a psychologist, from intake to closure, from treatment to bureaucratic red tape, in an attempt to reduce the distance between care provider and client – because after all, Van Houts observes: we are all patients.
