Don Melody Club is the solo project of Donald ‘Donny’ Madjid, the Amsterdam musician known for his work with the The Mauskovic Dance Band, with whom he toured the world three times. During a pandemic-induced sabbatical, Madjid began exploring the musical possibilities of a sixties drum machine – but not just any drum machine: It was the same instrument that Sly and the Family Stone used on their 1971 hit song Family Affair.

For his inspiration Madjid stayed close to home and delved into the Dutch musical and literary tradition, such as the music of Ramses Shaffy. “I listened to a lot of Shaffy in recent years, which showed me that the Dutch language can sound very pure and serious,” he said. Non-Dutch troubadours were also a source of inspiration for a sound that he describes as modest, personal and dreamy.

“Some call it bedroom pop. Synths and strings have the upper hand, and they accompany the vocals through the songs. Our drum computer ripples along a bit, which gives it a friendly sound," he said in an interview with 3voor12. His album Pure Donzin was released last year.
