SIMON WINDER
Simon Winder will be a guest at BorderKitchen on the occasion of his book Danubia. He works in the English publishing world. He previously wrote The Man Who Saved Britain and the highly praised Germania, the predecessor of Danubia.
Under the inspiring guidance of interviewer Wim Brands, you will meet the exceptionally humorous Simon Winder and the world of the Habsburgs.
For centuries, Europe was in the hands of the peculiar House of Habsburg, which ruled large parts of Central Europe and Germany until 1918 and involved itself in everything happening in Europe. Danubia is the collective name for the countries and regions around the River Danube, the homeland of the Habsburgs.
Simon Winder travels with great enthusiasm through this vast region, with its varied landscapes, cities and villages. In his highly personal way he shares his knowledge, astonishment and powers of observation and explains how the complex history of this dynasty fits together. He also tells the stories of the peoples and nations they ruled over, who often showed remarkable ingratitude towards their eccentric rulers in Vienna.
Danubia will be published in October in Dutch translation by Unieboek Spectrum. Winder will be interviewed by Wim Brands and will sign copies afterwards.
Quotes:
“Winder is a tour guide with an exceptional amount of knowledge. He talks on and on and hardly takes a breath. And you want to tell him: ‘Forget breathing and keep talking!’” – The New York Times Book Review
“I laughed so hard my wife woke up and I had to stop reading in bed.” – Sunday Times
About Germania:
“A highly entertaining study of ‘Germania’. With cheerful amazement Simon Winder writes about Germany. You hang on his every word as you once did with your favourite history teacher.” – Bart Funnekotter in NRC Handelsblad
