The thriller genre is booming. Nowadays, one in every four books read is a thriller. Karin Slaughter is one of the main reasons for that success. Her thrillers have been published in 23 languages, and in the Netherlands alone she has sold more than two million copies.
It is mainly women who read thrillers, which is striking given that women are also the primary victims of violence. Slaughter depicts that violence from a female perspective. In her books, outbreaks of violence are never cool or glamorous, but cold, brutal, and merciless. Her protagonists are not one-dimensional victims, but damaged people who are at the same time strong and independent survivors. Slaughter’s novels are so compelling because they are not only gripping page-turners, but also ruthless explorations of the psychology of abuse.
A “new Slaughter” is always eagerly awaited. At the beginning of July, the wait was over with the publication of Broken, once again featuring the familiar characters Sara Linton -- pathologist -- and the brilliant, dyslexic detective Will Trent. Unsurprisingly, Broken immediately shot to number one on the bestseller lists. On the occasion of her new novel, Karin Slaughter will be a guest at BorderKitchen, where she will be interviewed by Wim Brands (VPRO).
Please note: this edition of BorderKitchen will take place at a different venue. Location: Pulchri, Lange Voorhout 15, The Hague. Start time: 8:00 PM.
“Thrillers reflect their time and place, and good thrillers do that well. Mine are occasionally nasty, certainly, but never gratuitous. I describe reality: there is violence.” – Karin Slaughter
“Slaughter does not write violent slice-and-dice novels; they are pearls of passion, illuminated by the question ‘why?’ in neon lights.” – de Volkskrant
