AUTHOR
EMMANUEL CARRÈRE
On 19 May, French bestselling author Emmanuel Carrère will be a guest at BorderKitchen. He will be interviewed by journalist Maarten Dessing on the occasion of his new book Het koninkrijk. Emmanuel Carrère (1957) is a successful author, screenwriter, and director. He achieved international breakthrough with De sneeuwklas (1995), for which he received the Prix Femina. In 2011 he wrote Limonov, whose original version won the Prix Renaudot and whose Dutch translation received the European Literature Prize. He recently worked as co-screenwriter on the acclaimed French series Les Revenants.
The interview will be conducted in English.
Het koninkrijk tells the story of two men, Paul and Luke, who transformed a small Jewish sect around a crucified messiah into a religion that conquered the world and is still followed today by a quarter of the world’s population. It is not only a vivid fresco of the Mediterranean world of the time, marked by religious and political upheaval, but also a tumultuous reconstruction full of adventure and colourful characters.
At the same time, Het koninkrijk is a personal quest by Emmanuel Carrère, who became a practising Catholic twenty-five years ago to save his marriage, but later lost his faith. With respect and compassion, he searches for the meaning of Christianity and an explanation for the success of its counterintuitive principles (such as “the last shall be first”), both among believers and non-believers.
Het koninkrijk is published by De Bezige Bij. The original title is Le Royaume, translated from French by Kathelijne De Vuyst and Katrien Vandenberghe.
