BERNHARD SCHLINK

On Monday 29 September, BorderKitchen will host an interview with author Bernhard Schlink. He will be interviewed in German about his new novel De vrouw op de trap.

Bernhard Schlink (Germany, 1944) is emeritus professor of law at Humboldt University in Berlin. As a writer, he achieved worldwide fame twenty years ago with his novel De voorlezer, the first foreign novel to remain for a long time at number one on The New York Times bestseller list. The film adaptation, starring Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes, won an Oscar and a Golden Globe.

Schlink has also published the novels De thuiskomst and Het eerste weekend, the short story collections De liefdesval and Zomerleugens, the detective novel De oude zonden, and the essay Objectieve wetgeving en subjectieve rechters.

At the beginning of September, his novel De vrouw op de trap will be published. It centres on a woman and her portrait. This world-famous portrait, long thought to be lost, suddenly reappears. It is a surprise for the art world, but also for the three men who, long ago, each in their own way loved this woman – and who all ultimately felt betrayed by her.

This interview will be conducted in German. The Dutch translation is by Gerda Meijerink. This BorderKitchen event is organised in collaboration with the Genootschap Nederland Duitsland and the Literaturhaus │Deutsche Bibliothek.

“Bernhard Schlink may be a top-level jurist, but the writer Schlink is a courageous explorer of a far more treacherous terrain: the human heart.” – Newsweek
