The young, female, contemporary voice has been omnipresent in literature these past years. The source that seemingly keeps delivering fresh new authors now delivers us the work of Naoise Dolan. The Irish novelist published stories and other articles in loads of magazines and newspapers. Her writing is slightly tense and provocative: she asks questions about subjects that society often doesn’t appreciate. Is starting a family or having a decent job (whatever that may mean) or a monogamous relationship really that important?
In her debut novel, which is called Exciting Times, she uses the aforementioned questions to lay a groundwork on which she builds the rest of the story. In the book we follow 22 year old Ava, who uses money she received from her parents to travel to Hong Kong. Over there, she gets entangled in the expat world of the city, and finds herself in a relationship with a man. That relationship seems to be ‘nothing more’ than just sex, and that is exactly the type of unease Dolan uses for her literature.
