Flavia Bomfim

Flavia Bomfim is an artist and illustrator from Brazil whose 2022 mixed media book The Sailor’s Goodbye (published in Brazil as O adeus do marujo) tells the story of João Cândido, one of the leaders of the military rebellion against the mistreatment inflicted by white naval officers on black sailors in the early 20th century.

The book received a special mention at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair this year, with judges praising Bomfim’s unique visual style, which is the result of photographs printed printed in cyanotype on cotton fabric with embroidery.

Some symbols in the book make reference to the embroidery done by João Cândido while in prison. Flávia proposes a kind of narrative collaboration between herself and João through embroidery, weaving history between many temporalities and many dimensions.
