Abdellah Taïa

Moroccan author Abdellah Taïa realised his dreams. Growing up in a poor family of nine, he dreamt of writing novels and screenplays in Paris. Taïa left home to study French literature in Rabat, where he kept diaries in French, and indeed, went on to become a successful writer and filmmaker in Paris. He was the first Arabic author to come out about his homosexuality and became an icon in the Arab world: a beacon of hope in a society that forbids homosexuality.
